Hanjin Shipping’s Environmental Safety Management System is in accordance to the ISO 14001. With its basis in environmental safety policies, all ships and departments establish and execute action plans in regards to executing, monitoring, reporting and revising for the more effective practice of environment management.
GHG Emissions Management
Hanjin Shipping declared our commitment to environmentally-friendly management with environmental goals developed in line with environmental policies.

The increasing consumption of fossil fuels since the 1870s has resulted in an increase in CO2 emissions. In a bid to address Climate Change issues, the 15th UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) held in 2009 called for member countries to curtail atmospheric CO2 emissions to less than 450ppm and for the increase of global temperatures to be no more than 2˚C above preindustrial levels. Contrary to common belief, the global shipping industry is an eco-friendly form of transportation, accounting approximately for just over 2.7% of global CO2 emissions. Conducting business in the ocean, known as the origin of life, Hanjin Shipping is well aware of the importance of protecting the environment. We will continuously look for and implement various environmental management initiatives in order to mitigate climate change.
GHG Emissions Management
In 2010, Hanjin Shipping introduced the Greenhouse Gas Inventory System for the integrated control of carbon emissions arising from business activities. The system collects data regarding carbon emissions by source and calculates the total carbon emissions of our company in order to establish the base year and carbon emission reduction goal.
Hanjin Shipping’s total GHG emissions are shown in the table below. Total emissions were the lowest in 2009 due to a decrease in cargo volume brought about by the market conditions of the shipping industry. With the shipping industry recovering in 2010, emissions from vessels totaled 9.67 million tons. Our GHG emissions volume for 2009 was verified by the Korean Register (KR), while 2010 data was verified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV)

GHG Emissions Disclosure
(Unit: TON)

Approximately 99% of Hanjin Shipping’s GHG emissions come from the operation of our ships. In regards to terminals, emissions from Busan New Port accounted for 25%, while the Yoido office building emitted 33% of the total emissions from company buildings.
Green NGO activities
Hanjin Shipping transparently discloses information regarding our carbon emissions to stakeholders and is actively involved in various NGO activities to evaluate and find ways to improve the carbon footprint of our container supply chain (mainly on ocean routes).
Clean Cargo Working Group Activities
The Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) is a working group under the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) organization designed to minimize the environmental impact of marine transportation and work on creating an environmentally-friendly transportation systems. Members of this group include leading global shippers and shipping companies. The members share information regarding annual CO2, NOx and SOx emissions from their containerships. Based on such data, the shippers assess the shipping companies, and use this information as marketing instruments to assess member carriers, while engaging in various initiatives to reduce emissions and improve performance.
CDP(Carbon Disclosure Project)
The carbon disclosure project (CDP) is an environmental organization established in December 2000 and sponsored by the British government. The organization collects data and the long-term plans of global businesses’ efforts to deal with GHG emissions and reports this information to global financial institutions and investors. Hanjin Shipping began answering the CDP questionnaire in 2010, earning the highest score among Korean shipping companies that year.
