From the 1990s to the early 200s,HJS’s Corporate Social
Responsibility(CSR) activities focused mainly onproviding research grants
and scholarships, and investing in educational facilities.
The company donated approximately 6% of its ordinary profit from 1993
to 2008 to CSR programs.
In line with the companywide mission outlined in the 2004 mid-to-long term
management strategy (Community & Environmental Contributions) and
Vision 2017 that emphasized corporate responsibility for the environment
and communities, the company reinforced efforts to practice ethical,
transparent and socially responsible management.
Through the voluntary participation of employees, the company promoted
a corporate culture of sharing and diversified social initiatives to include
disaster relief work, community cooperation, charity programs for neighbors
in need, and support for arts and education.
In 2004, an employee volunteer group was formed which operates under a matching grant system. Under the scheme, the company matches donations raised by employees. Since 2005, the company has been celebrating its foundation day by organizing social contribution programs like blood drives, participation in Habitat for Humanity projects and hosting of charity bazaars. In 2007, HJS donated funds to Yang Hyun Foundation as part of the matching grant system.
The charitable organization was founded in 2006 with a financial contribution by the late Chairman Sooho Cho. It was established to uphold his lifelong commitment to philanthropy that emphasized corporate social responsibility and redistribution of wealth. The foundation supports a wide range of endeavors including shipping and logistics studies, scholarships, and medical programs.
In addition, the company took part in Taean oil spill cleanup efforts in December 2007 and offered relief funds for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake in May 2008. HJS also supprted the World Vision program for Third World children and the building of primary schools in Nakyang City, China.
In addition to being an active sponsor of modern Korean artists who are making inroads into overseas art scenes, HJS also supports a wide range of global Mecenat programs. Its support for arts and culture included “New Asian Wave,” an exhibition to mark the 10-year anniversary of ZKM museum in Germany in 2007; Mark Rothko Retrospective Exhibition at Hamburg’s Kunsthalle Museum in 2008; the Korean International ArtFair in September 2008; Shanghai Biennale in November 2008; and Korean exhibition hall at the Venice Biennale in September 2009.
Volunteer Activities
Hanjin Shipping’s social contribution programs run year-round and across-the-boarder; with all employees voluntarily donating their time and talent to help those in need. The employees’ volunteer corps “Love Thy Neighbor” raises funds to subsidize medical expenses for children with cardiac diseases, as well as hosting musical concerts and bazaars for charitable causes and conducting blood drives for children with cancer.

Distributing Coal Briquettes
In 2009, 35 of our new employees delivered 3,000 briquettes and gifts to the underprivileged in southern Seoul incollaboration with the “Coal Briquette for Neighbors” NGO.
New Employee Orientation
In January of 2010, 34 new employees of Hanjin Shipping and Cyber Logitec made and donated environmentally friendly soap to local charities. At the event arranged by the Environment Action Association, our employees made 1,000 pieces of soap at the workshop of a local orphanage in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul before donating these to a local community center for elderly citizens.
Donation of a container lounge to the Doty Memorial Hospital
In April 2010, we remodeled and donated two 40ft containers to be used as lounges to the Doty Memorial Hospital, a charity hospital that provides free medical services to multi-cultural families and those in need.
Sharing Food for Love
In December 2010, Hanjin Shipping New Port donated 3.5 tons of flour to 50 orphanages and social welfare centers in Seoul and Busan. This flour was harvested from Hanjin Shipping’s agricultural subsidiary in Romania.
Culture & Education Programs
In 2008, we donated containers to the Busan Biennale to be used as a pavilions. In 2009, we donated equipment and facilities for a container library inconjunction with the “Library for the Future” a public art project organized by the Gyeonggi Culture Foundation. Since 2008, we have sponsored the Kunsthalle Art Museum of Hamburg, Germany and the Shanghai Biennale as part of our Mecenat marketing initiative.

Official Sponsor of the “Korea Contemporary Art Exhibition” at LACMA
We sponsored the “Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea” exhibition at the Los Angeles CountyMuseum of Art (LACMA) in June of 2009. Following this event, the artwork of these 12 Korean artists, includingJung A Kim, Bum Kim, Su Ja Kim, were exhibited at the Houston Museum of Art in November. As the official sponsor, Hanjin Shipping invited our customers to the exhibition in appreciation of their belief in our company.
Official Sponsor of the “Fernando Botero Exhibition” at the Museum of Art, Deoksu Palace
We invited 100 of our Korean customers to the “Fernando Botero Exhibition” at the Museum of Art, Deoksu Palace. After the viewing of the exhibition featuring the paintings of the famous Columbian artist, which was sponsored by Hanjin Shipping, our valued guests were invited to a gala dinner.
Invitation to MoMA
In April of 2010, we invited 180 guests to the exhibition “Monet Water Lilies”, of which we were the official sponsor.Our customers from the US East Coast and officials from local shipping and logistics associations and governmental agencies attended the exhibition and formal dinner.
Donation of School Supplies and Educational Equipment to Chinese Children
In March of 2010, Hanjin Shipping donated school supplies worth RMB 80,000 to students from the ElementarySchools for Hope project in two districts of Luoyang city. In October of 2010, we also donated computers and sports equipment worth RMB 130,000 to the Elementary Schools for Hope in two areas of Chongqing city andWuhan city. Our continued social contribution programs have earned us a good reputation among localgovernments, teachers and students.
YangHyun Foundation

The YangHyun Foundation was established in 2006 in pursuit of
the philosophy and desire of the late Chairman of Hanjin Shipping
Co., Ltd., Mr. Sooho Cho.
The YangHyun Foundation focuses on supporting various academic
research projects in the shipping, logistics and maritime industries.
Scholarships and financial aid have been established for talented
youths in arts and sports, as well as those with financial difficulties
and suffering from serious illnesses.
Dedicated to the development of shipping and logistics industries,
the foundation subsidizes scholars conducting research within the industry.
In particular, the foundation has continued to expand its scope of programs
to include the fostering of medical specialists in incurable diseases,
the development of medical simulation training, the sponsoring of a Cyber School for child patients who can’t attend school, and the conducting of free art therapeutic classes.
It was also the first in Korea to launch an international art award called the Yanghyun Art Awards, and thus contributing to the development of the Korean art and culture society. Furthermore, the Yanghyun Foundation conducts quarterly social contribution activities to offer sponsorships to social welfare centers and those in need.
