Why Hanjin Shipping?

Definition
General definition
Materials and things are defined as hazardous cargo which, due to their nature, characteristics, or their state, could endanger the public safety and order, in particular the public at large, important common property, life and health of human beings as well as animals and the environment and other things.
Definition as Maritime transportation.
- The Oil specified in the MARPOL 73/78 Appendix I
- The Gas specified in the IGC Code
- Hazardous liquid material / Chemical including the waste specified in the IBC Code & MARPOL 73/78 Appendix II
- Hazardous material, product including marine pollutant & waste specified in the IMDG Code.
- Hazardous bulk solid material including the waste specified in the BC code Appendix B
Others
Empty container, not cleaned residue of DG (General container , Tank container, LP, IBC, Portable tank), is considered as DG cargo. If it is stuffed with non-hazardous or cleaned residue of DG & completed gas free, It is not considered as DG cargo.
Packing of Dangerous Cargo
The acceptable packing for all UN NO (Proper Shipping name) of DG cargo is regualted by IMDG Code. The packaging, is not specified in IMDG code, is unacceptable.
Marking of Packing
- Detailed information for packaging should be marked on surface of packaging.
- Each packing should be marked
symbol on surface.
Example for improper packing & stuffing

Dangerous Cargo Shipping Procedure
Provide the information for DG cargo
Shipper should submit below information for safety carriage of DG shipment
DG cargo Application
Shipper should submit the application to sales office at least four (4) working days in advance prior to vessel's arrival at the loading port.
Application for high risk special dangerous cargoes such as explosives, self reactive substances, organic peroxides, temperature controlled dangerous cargoes and First Schedule Dangerous Goods for SIN (former MPA I), will be made at least seven (7) working days in advance prior to vessel's arrival at the loading port.
Acceptance or Rejection for shipment
Hanjin Shipping confirms acceptance or rejection within one (1) working day.
Documentation
- Whenever the DG cargo is loaded on board vessel, the Shipper shall prepare necessary documentation required by IMDG code, 49CFR or other local regulation of calling and transit ports such as Declaration of Dangerous Goods, Declaration of Dangerous Goods in Container and Container Packing Certificate etc
- Shipper shall be responsible for all loss, damage and expense, direct or indirect, arising from omission of information on declaration or false declaration of DG cargoes or any break of IMDG Code, 49CFR or other local rule by shipper,
LABEL & PLACARD
- Shipper has responsibility for proper label & placard according to IMDG code on the container.
- Shipper should check the proper placard including subsidiary risk label.
If found any DG container which no shown DG placard or unsuitable placard, It will be rejected.
DG Classification
Dangerous cargo should get permission before loading because every and each port has own regulation for DG handling according to classified cargos. Here, we introduce IMDG CODE classification for customer reference. It is subject to conditions so, please check to local Hanjin office before loading.
Class 1 Explosives
The goods of Class 1 is required pre-permission for transportation at loading/discharging/calling port due to that major goods are the explosives / weaponry.
Substances and articles which have a mass explosion hazard
Substances and articles which have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard
Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both, but not a mass explosion hazard
Substances and articles which present no significant hazard
- Hanjin Shipping accepted only Class 1.4 on own operating vessel
Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard
Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard
Class 2 Gases
- All gases except carbonated beverages.
- A Gas is a substance which;
1. at 50°C has a vapour pressure greater than 300kPa or
2. is completely gaseous at 20°C at a standard pressure of 101.3 kPa
* The higher risk : class 2.3 > 2.1 > 2.2
Class 3 Fammable liquids
Flammable liquids are liquids, or mixtures of liquids, or liquids containing solids in solution or suspension (such as paints, varnishes, lacquers, etc., but not including substances which, on account of their other dangerous characteristics, have been included in other classes) which give off a flammable vapour at or below 60°C closed-cup test (corresponding to 65.6°C open- cup test) If the flash point is under 60°C in case that IMO label is not class 3, then the Subsidiary risk label should be class 3.
Flash Point
The lowest temperature of a liquid at which its vapour forms an ignitable mixture with air. A specified quantity of the liquid is introduced into a receptacle at a temperature well below the flashpoint to be expected, then slowly heated; periodically, a small flame is brought near to the surface of the liquid. The flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which a "flash" is observed.
Class 4 Flammable solids
Flammable solids , self-reactive substances , solid desensitized explosives which may explode if not diluted sufficiently - Solids which, under conditions encountered in transport, are readily combustible or may cause or contribute to fire through friction.
Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
Class 5 oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
Oxidizing substances
- Substances which, while in themselves not necessarily combustible, may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause, or contribute to the combustion of other material.
Organic peroxides
- they may have one or more of the following properties: - be liable to explosive decomposition; - burn rapidly; - be sensitive to impact or friction; - react dangerously with other substances;- cause damage to the eyes.
* HJS prohibits to load the temperature controlled Organic peroxides due to the feature of explosive.
Class 6 Toxic and infectious substances
Toxic substances
- These are Substances liable either to cause death or serious injury or to harm human health if swallowed or inhaled, or by skin contact
- Nearly all toxic substances evolve toxic gases when involved in a fire or when heated to decomposition.
Infectious substances
- Substances known or reasonably expected to contain pathogens.
- Class 6.2 is prohibited by HJS’s policy.
Packing Group
Class 6.1 : I / II / III, Class 6.2 -
Class 7 Radioactive material
- - Radioactive material means any material containing radionuclides where both the activity concentration and the tot activity in the consignment exceed the values.
- - Most shipping company permitted restrictively to load the class7.
- - Each port Authority permit very restrictively & some ports refuse to callin
- - It is required the pre-approval fm port authority of each loading/discharging/transiting canal& calling port .
* IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)
Class 8 Corrosive substances
- - substances which, by chemical action, will cause severe damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage, or even destroy, other goods or the means of transport.
- - a note to that effect is made in the Dangerous Goods List in chapter 3.2
ex) causes (severe) burns to skin, eyes and mucous membranes vapour irritates mucous membranes
- - involved in a fire, evolves toxic gases
Packing Group
Class 8 : I / II / III
PG I : Very dangerous substances and preparations
PG II : Substances and preparations presenting medium danger
PG III : Substances and preparations presenting minor danger
Class 9 Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles
- - substances and articles (miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles)are substances and articles which, during transport, present a danger not covered by other classes.
- - substances that are transported or offered for transport at temperatures equal to, or exceeding, 100°C, in a liquid state, and solids that are transported or offered for transport at temperatures equal to or exceeding 240°C.
